Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant faces shutdown as the Danube water levels hit record lows

Hungary's Paks nuclear plant, which supplies a third of the country's electricity, is nearing complete shutdown as record-low Danube water levels prevent reactor cooling. The crisis coincides with a forecast heatwave exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, straining the power grid and public services. Experts warn the resulting power cuts could cost Hungary's economy more than $600m, hitting agriculture, industry and energy import costs.
