Ghana's proposed constitutional reforms have sparked fresh debate over presidential powers, local government appointments, tenure of office and institutional independence.
Political analyst Dr Jonathan Asante-Okyere says Ghana must approach constitutional reforms by drawing from its own governance systems and values rather than simply adopting foreign models. He also raised concerns about presidential influence over key appointments, including the position of the Chief Justice.
NDC MP for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, welcomed the proposal to change Ghana's presidential tenure to five years, arguing that longer terms could give governments more time to implement policies.
Host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, questioned aspects of the proposed reforms, particularly the appointment of District Chief Executives (DCEs), arguing that clarity is needed on how changes would affect the existing power structure.
Private legal practitioner Justice Abdulai also shared his views on the government's reform proposals, highlighting areas he supports and others he believes require further consideration.
