Ghana’s GH¢36 Billion Food Import Bill Sparks Fresh Questions on Agriculture

Ghana spent more than GH¢36 billion importing food products in 2025, with cereal grains, frozen chicken and animal products accounting for a significant share of the country's food import bill.

The figures are contained in the latest Annual International Merchandise Trade Statistics Report released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The report highlights Ghana's continued reliance on imported food products and the growing need to strengthen local agricultural production.
