Former National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lartey Vanderpuye, has welcomed the Supreme Court's decision declaring the delegates system used by political parties to elect presidential and parliamentary candidates unconstitutional.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV, Mr. Vanderpuye described the ruling as a positive step towards strengthening internal party democracy and increasing participation in political party primaries.
The Supreme Court, in a 5–2 majority decision, directed political parties to replace the delegates system with a process that allows all members in good standing to directly participate in selecting presidential and parliamentary candidates.
However, Mr. Vanderpuye cautioned that implementing the new system would come with significant financial and logistical challenges.
He shared his experience with the NDC's adoption of a broader electoral system in 2016, highlighting the high cost involved in organising internal party elections.
