Iran sees US 'making space for diplomacy' as 'deception tactic'

Iran views the US pause in strikes not as a genuine diplomatic opening, but as a "deception tactic" driven by military pressure, strategic calculations and oil-price concerns, says Ali Akbar Dareini, a researcher and writer at the Strategic Studies of Public Policy Journal in Tehran.

He argues that Tehran no longer trusts negotiations under Trump and sees the pattern of talks followed by strikes as a vicious cycle. The Iranian conclusion, Dareini points out, is that President Trump has not been convinced to end the war. Tehran's focus has therefore shifted to raising the cost of conflict for Washington, through asymmetric means if necessary.

On the alleged Ukrainian attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, Dareini says Iran is likely to retaliate. While the form of that response remains unclear, he notes that Iranian missiles have the range to reach Kyiv, signaling that any retaliation could extend far beyond the Middle East.
