COPEC Urges GPRTU to Review Proposed 30% Transport Fare Hike

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has urged the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to reconsider its proposed 30% increase in transport fares, saying the adjustment could put additional pressure on commuters.

COPEC Executive Secretary Duncan Amoah acknowledged that rising fuel prices and increased operational costs provide justification for transport operators to seek a fare review.

However, he argued that the proposed 30% increase is too high, suggesting that a lower adjustment would better reflect current conditions while protecting passengers from excessive cost increases.

The GPRTU has indicated that the 30% figure is not a final decision but an opening position for negotiations, citing fuel prices, spare parts, insurance and other operating costs as factors driving its request.
