Indian police officer suspended for opening fire during protests

Indian authorities suspended a policeman for firing bullets in the air from his AK-47 assault rifle over the weekend. The police officer allegedly fired to break up a group of protesters who were marching toward parliament in the capital, New Delhi, on July 20.

The demonstrations stem from a leaked question sheet for a national medical college entrance exam that happened in May. More than 2 million people took the exam and had to retake a new version of the test after the scandal was revealed, which sparked outrage among the test-takers.

This latest development comes just days after the Indian Education Minister resigned over the leak, with protesters reporting being attacked with canes and tear gas by authorities.
