China's mangrove forests continue to expand
Mangroves are salt-tolerant coastal forests that play a vital role in protecting the environment. They shield shorelines from storms and erosion while providing critical habitat for marine life and migratory birds. Yet half of the world's mangrove ecosystems are at risk of collapse by 2050, according to the Global Mangrove Alliance.
China began protecting its mangrove forests in the 1980s. In 2020, it launched a five-year action plan to restore and add 18,800 hectares (46,500 acres) of mangroves by 2025. That target has now been achieved, with mangrove coverage continuing to expand.
On July 26, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, China announced that it has planted around 11,600 hectares (28,700 acres) of new mangroves since 2020. The country's mangrove forests now cover 31,700 hectares (78,300 acres), an increase of 44% since the beginning of the century.
It is one of the few countries in the world where mangrove coverage continues to expand. Authorities are in the process of drafting its next five-year plan for mangrove protection and restoration, which will guide local governments in strengthening conservation efforts nationwide.
