Berlin Pride attack leaves city in mourning after suspect shot dead

A deadly attack disrupted Berlin's Pride celebrations after a 21-year-old suspect allegedly drove a vehicle into a crowd before attacking people with a blade.

Berlin police say officers later located the suspect, who reportedly threatened them with a weapon before being shot dead. Authorities say the suspect had previous criminal convictions.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the attack and called for unity, saying Germany would defend freedom and democratic values. Memorials have since been established across Berlin as residents mourn the victims and reflect on the impact of the attack.

The incident has also renewed concerns about public security and fears that extremist groups could seek to exploit the tragedy for political purposes.
