More than 360,000 evacuated as wildfires rage across France and Spain

More than 360,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and holiday spots as wildfires rage across France and Spain. In France's southwestern Gironde region, 55,000 people were evacuated overnight on Sunday, with some 250,000 people evacuated from the region so far. Around 42,000 hectares of land in Gironde alone have already burned in one of the largest wildfires France has endured since the Second World War. The flames are advancing towards the famous wine-growing port city of Bordeaux. Spain has declared a national emergency, with more than 116,000 people evacuated due to fires west of Madrid and in the eastern Valencia region. Firefighters there found an elderly man dead inside his car on Saturday. French authorities have deployed 1,500 military personnel, 1,700 security personnel, and 1,400 firefighters, with military planes dropping flame retardants. The European Union has dispatched five aircraft and two helicopters to France. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has warned of "complex times ahead" as around 130,000 hectares have already burned in Spain this year.
