Thousands protest in Tunisia as opposition challenges President Saied

Thousands of people have gathered in Tunisia's capital, Tunis, to protest against President Kais Saied, five years after he assumed emergency powers that reshaped the country's political system.

Demonstrators criticised the country's economic conditions and called for democratic reforms, accusing the government of concentrating power in the presidency. Since 2021, Saied has introduced a new constitution, ruled by decree and significantly reduced the powers of parliament.

Opposition figures and civil society groups say the demonstrations are aimed at holding the government accountable and demanding political and economic change.

The protests come as Tunisia continues to face economic challenges and political divisions over the future of its democratic institutions.
