The Apinto Divisional Council has endorsed calls for the establishment of a Ghanaian-owned mining company in Tarkwa, describing the move as a major step toward ensuring host communities benefit more from the country's mineral wealth.
Speaking at a press conference, Gyasehene Dr. Nana Adarkwa Bediako III said the Council's support follows a review of the profitability of Gold Fields' Tarkwa Mine, which highlighted the potential for increased local participation and shared prosperity.
The Council believes stronger Ghanaian ownership in the mining sector will create more opportunities for communities and ensure that the benefits of mineral resources are more widely shared.
