Brazil tackles clean energy bottleneck

Brazil has rapidly expanded wind and solar power generation, particularly in its northeastern region, but the country's electricity grid has struggled to keep pace. Last year, roughly one-fifth of the renewable energy that could have been generated was curtailed because transmission capacity and demand were insufficient. Experts say expanding long-distance transmission lines and investing in battery storage are key to reducing energy waste. China's State Grid Corporation of China is playing a major role by accelerating construction of ultra-high-voltage transmission lines that will carry renewable energy from northeastern Brazil to the country's industrial southeast.
