Positive and then false positive: America's lettuce mess

More than 11,500 people have fallen sick in a multistate Cyclospora outbreak, with US regulators initially offering conflicting assessments before zeroing in on Mexican-grown lettuce as the suspected source. Mexico has responded by demanding that US authorities provide conclusive evidence to support the claim.

The parasitic infection, which causes severe diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, has been traced to lettuce served at Taco Bell locations across Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed approximately 100 hospitalizations in connection with the outbreak.

Taco Bell is owned by Yum Brands. Meanwhile, consumers remain divided. We asked people outside Taco Bell whether they are still eating there.
