Kremlin downplays hopes for Ukraine peace talks after Lavrov-Rubio meeting

The Kremlin has voiced scepticism about renewed peace talks following a meeting between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was too early to speak of fresh diplomatic momentum, with no date set for a visit by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The talks come as the EU imposes a 21st sanctions package, targeting banks, crypto firms and oil traders while capping Russian oil prices at $44 a barrel. Moscow says the measures are having limited impact, with rising global oil prices amid Gulf tensions offsetting losses; Reuters estimates Russian oil and gas revenue could rise by 60 percent year-on-year in July.
