NPP Ashanti Plans Vigils for Chairman Wontumi After 20-Year Sentence

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region has called on party members to stand in solidarity with its Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his 20-year prison sentence in a mining-related case.

Chairman Wontumi was convicted by the High Court in Accra on two counts and sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently.

Following a meeting with the party's 2028 flagbearer and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP Ashanti Regional Executives announced plans to organise activities, including vigils, in support of the incarcerated chairman.

The party leadership also accused the government of targeting opposition members and vowed to resist what they described as persecution.

Addressing a news conference in Kumasi, Acting Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Patrick Acheampong, said the party would continue to defend its members.
