US judge sets 2027 trial date for Venezuela’s Maduro and wife in drug case

A US judge has set June 2027 as the trial date for Venezuela's former president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. The couple appeared in a New York court, where they pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and related charges. US prosecutors accuse Maduro and Flores of being involved in a conspiracy to move cocaine into the United States. Maduro's defence team says it will challenge the case, including arguments over his status as a former head of state and the circumstances of his capture. The proceedings follow Maduro's removal from power and transfer to US custody earlier this year. The case has become a major legal and political test between Washington and Caracas.
