Will Trump succeed in revisiting birthright citizenship after SCOTUS ruling?

The U.S. Supreme Court last month upheld birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment, affirming that U.S. citizenship is granted for anyone born in the U.S. The decision struck down an executive order President Trump signed in 2021 on his first day back in office that sought to limit citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants. Trump said he would ask the court to revisit the case, though legal experts call that unlikely, and Congress shows little appetite to amend a right that has stood for more than 150 years.

The ruling traces back to the 1898 case of Wong Kim Ark, which extended citizenship to children of immigrants born on U.S. soil. Immigration advocates, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, celebrated the decision, while the administration continues to argue that it encourages so-called birth tourism.
