Trump floats tariffs over Canadian wildfire smoke

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday, July 19, that Canada “maybe should pay some tariffs,” as smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed much of the northeastern United States last week, prompting air quality alerts across several states.

According to CBS News, around 100 million Americans across 14 states have been affected by smoke from Canadian wildfires. Canadian government data showed that, as of Monday, July 20, there were 843 active wildfires burning, with 181 considered “out of control.”

On Monday, July 20, Trump imposed an additional 50 percent tariff on most Canadian goods, effective in 30 days, citing what the administration called “discriminatory” trade barriers.
