Nearly three years on, Gaza families search for loved ones beneath the rubble

Civil defence crews in Gaza City are digging through the rubble of an apartment block destroyed in Israeli strikes in November 2023, an attack that killed more than 300 people. Nearly half of the victims, including dozens of children, remain unrecovered beneath the debris. Families continue to search with basic tools, hoping to give missing relatives a dignified burial. Officials warn the operation is hampered by a shortage of fuel, spare parts and heavy machinery, while the absence of DNA testing in Gaza makes identifying remains increasingly difficult.
