Otumfuo Declares: Families Cannot Claim Allodial Ownership Of Asante Lands

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has stressed that allodial ownership of lands within Asanteman is vested solely in stools, which hold such lands in trust for the Golden Stool.
Speaking during a lecture series at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi as part of activities marking the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Ghana, the Asantehene said families and individuals cannot claim allodial title over lands in Asante.
According to him, families and individuals may only hold leasehold or usufructuary interests in lands but do not possess allodial ownership under Asante customary law.
The Asantehene noted that land ownership issues, including disputes over stool lands and customary interests, continue to fuel uncertainty and litigation.
He also referenced the lands of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), explaining the historical circumstances surrounding their acquisition and expressing concern over attempts to challenge ownership of portions of the land.
