“Modernise Chieftaincy Dispute Resolution” — Otumfuo Pushes For Judicial Reforms

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for urgent reforms to modernise the system for resolving chieftaincy disputes in Ghana.
Speaking during a lecture series at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi as part of activities marking the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Ghana, Otumfuo stressed the need to strengthen and reform the judicial committees of the Houses of Chiefs.
He said the committees must be properly trained and equipped to ensure the speedy and final determination of cases involving stools and skins.
According to the Asantehene, delays in resolving chieftaincy disputes, some of which last for generations, affect not only individual claimants but also deprive communities of stable leadership.
He highlighted the traditional role of chieftaincy as a system built around justice, reconciliation and community harmony, noting that historical dispute resolution processes focused on restoring peace rather than punishment.
