Chancellor Merz does not want US to interfere in German elections

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said he doesn't want the U.S. to interfere in German elections, in response to a question about the U.S. State Department releasing $5 million in grants to support what the Trump administration describes as “Western civilization heritage in Europe”.

Merz was asked by a reporter if he thought the new U.S. program adds up to political interference.

Beneficiaries of the U.S. funding must “address national sovereignty, migration, censorship, and lawfare challenges in line with shared political philosophy, law, and our common Western civilizational heritage,” a statement reads.

U.S. National Security Strategy has also said that President Trump desires to boost “patriotic European parties”.
