Alon Pinkas: JD Vance’s Israel criticism exposes a deepening US-Israel divide
in an interview with Al Jazeera, Alon Pinkas, former Israeli ambassador and consul general in New York, described Vice President JD Vance's accusations against Israel as "unprecedented in their severity." Vance had accused Israel of running a campaign to undermine US policy and torpedo the US-Iran agreement. Pinkas said no sitting US vice president or president has ever accused Israel of such actions. Pinkas noted that Vance's remarks come against a background of MAGA movement figures accusing Netanyahu of dragging the US into war and manipulating President Trump. He said Vance was likely referring to a pro-Israel digital advocacy campaign run by former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale, but noted the accusation is broader than one campaign. Pinkas suggested Vance's comments could be a warning to Netanyahu ahead of a potential visit to Washington. He also highlighted a tectonic shift in US public opinion, with polls showing Americans increasingly indifferent to the US-Israel alliance, which he called "very worrying" for Israel.
