Malaysian scholar: 14-country statement on South China Sea only complicates dispute

Ruhanas Harun, a professor at the National Defence University of Malaysia, said she sees no contribution from the so-called South China Sea arbitration award to resolving the disputes. Instead, she argued that it has compounded the problem by drawing in what she described as "non-relevant powers," including the United States, Australia and Japan, thereby creating greater confusion, citing the recent joint statement issued by 14 countries to mark the 10th anniversary of the so-called South China Sea arbitration award as an example.
