Europe's heatwave linked to over 10,000 excess deaths, researchers say
Europe is experiencing its third major heatwave of the summer, with scientists warning that its deadliest effects are only now emerging. One monitoring group estimates more than 10,000 excess deaths were linked to the event across the continent. In the UK, the Met Office recorded over 2,700 excess deaths during the May and June heatwaves in England and Wales, with climate change adding 3-4°C to peak temperatures and driving 42% of those deaths. Experts say improving early warning systems will be crucial as such extreme conditions become more frequent.
