Accountability Series: Government Moves to Protect Achimota Forest as Ecological Safety Zone

Cabinet has directed the immediate revocation of Executive Instrument (E.I.) 144, as amended by E.I. 234, restoring the affected portions of the Achimota Forest to their original status as part of the Forest Reserve.

E.I. 144, issued in 2022, removed about 361.5 acres (approximately 146 hectares) of land from the Achimota Forest Reserve, allowing it to be used for purposes beyond its protected forest status.

The decision generated public debate, with concerns raised over the environmental implications of altering the status of one of Accra's key ecological zones.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah said the revocation reflects government's commitment to protecting the Achimota Forest as an ecological safety zone for Accra and surrounding communities.
