US strikes hit Iran’s Qeshm Island as Hormuz tensions escalate
There have been more explosions along Iran's southern coast in the last few hours, with the most recent reports coming from Qeshm Island. Local officials say US projectiles hit the area in the second attack on the strategic island, which is home to Revolutionary Guard military and naval assets. Kuwait has sounded warning sirens and says its army is intercepting hostile projectiles. In recent days, Iran has also launched drone and missile attacks on Bahrain, Jordan, the UAE, Oman and Qatar, with vessels in the Strait of Hormuz also hit. US forces have carried out multiple air strikes targeting naval and military locations in southern Iran in an attempt to degrade Iran's military and coastal defence capabilities. It appears the US wants to eliminate Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz. The Revolutionary Guard has carried out retaliatory operations targeting US military assets in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain. The conflict is shifting from military confrontation to economic warfare, as Donald Trump has imposed new sanctions on Iran, blockading its southern ports and revoking a waiver allowing Iran to export oil and petrochemicals. Iranian officials are defiantly rejecting the blockade, saying they have other ways to keep their oil flowing. Meanwhile, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by the Revolutionary Guard is inflicting economic losses regionally and internationally.
