UMaT’s Award-Winning AI Traffic System Could Help Ease Congestion Across Ghana

The Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Prof. Richard Kwasi Amankwah, is calling on the Ministry of Transport to consider scaling up Smart Flow—an AI-driven traffic monitoring and management system created by mathematics and engineering students to improve traffic flow, particularly during peak commuting hours. The innovation was crowned the Overall Best Student Innovation at the 2026 UMaT Innovation and Career Fair, reflecting the university's focus on using research and technology to address national challenges. According to the university, Smart Flow is designed to analyze traffic conditions in real time, support more efficient traffic management, reduce congestion on major roads, shorten travel times, and improve productivity for commuters and businesses.
