Sheikh Hamad built the Qatar the world knows today, says Adam Ereli
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Adam Ereli, former Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Qatar, paid tribute to the late Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing him as a "very personable" leader with "tremendous vision and courage." Ereli identified four pillars of the Emir's legacy: Ras Laffan, Al Udeid, Al Jazeera and Education City – projects that transformed Qatar and the region. He said the Emir had the ability to see beyond what anyone could imagine and had the courage to take risks. Ereli also praised the team behind Sheikh Hamad's vision, including Sheikha Moza, Abdullah Al-Attiyah, Hamad bin Jassim and Hamad bin Thamer, saying the Emir's greatest achievement was developing Qatar's human capital. Ereli also noted that Qatar's ambitions were born partly of necessity – as a small country with big neighbours, it had to protect itself. He said the Father Emir ensured Qatar could "stand on its own against anybody" who tried to push it around. He also praised the Emir's vision in launching Al Jazeera, saying it put Qatar on the map and remains a free and independent platform.
