NEW DVLA NUMBER PLATES: Random Letters To Replace Predictable Registration System

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) says its new digital number plates will provide capacity for more than six million unique vehicle registrations at each DVLA centre, eliminating concerns about repeated letters and numbers.

According to the Authority, the new plates will feature a registration centre suffix and two randomly generated letters produced by an algorithm, making the system more secure and eliminating predictability.

The digital plates will be available in multiple categories, including government, private, commercial, electric vehicle, diplomatic, trailer, private motorcycle, commercial motorcycle, customised, and ceremonial plates.

Speaking during a sensitisation programme, DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey said the plates are based on a German-designed system capable of generating millions of unique combinations.
