President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to change their attitudes towards waste disposal and take responsibility for keeping communities clean.
Speaking at Alajo, one of the communities worst affected by the June 29 floods, during the national cleanup exercise, President Mahama thanked the Ghana Armed Forces, security services, traditional leaders, and residents who participated in the exercise.
He said the devastating floods must strengthen Ghana's resolve to become a more resilient nation, stressing that clearing drains and waterways is critical to reducing the impact of future floods.
President Mahama noted that the Alajo drain, which forms part of the Odaw stream, had been heavily affected by accumulated silt, plastics, household waste, and discarded items including building materials and furniture.
He urged residents to stop dumping waste into drains, reminding them that “drains are not dumping grounds” and encouraging proper use of waste disposal facilities.
The President also announced plans to institutionalise the cleanup exercise, with communities expected to come together at least once every month to clean their surroundings.
