Typhoon Bavi to hit eastern China with floods and landslides

China, Taiwan and Japan are bracing for Typhoon Bavi, which has eased from its peak but expanded in size, after monsoon rains intensified by the storm triggered deadly landslides in the southern Philippines. At its strongest Bavi produced sustained winds of about 290 km/h, now near 140 km/h — the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane — with landfall forecast along eastern China on Saturday evening local time. The main threat is heavy rain, with 300–400 mm in a day possible and isolated totals above half a metre, risking flash floods, landslides and storm surges. Travel disruption and widespread power outages are likely over the coming days.
