GTEC Freezes New Distance Learning Centre Accreditation Over Quality Concerns

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has placed a temporary freeze on the accreditation of new distance learning centres, but says the decision is not aimed at discouraging distance education in Ghana.
According to the Commission, distance learning remains an important component of tertiary education and helps expand access. However, GTEC says it is concerned about the growing practice where lecturers and faculty members travel across the country to conduct classes in locations such as secondary schools and church premises that may not meet required academic standards.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 3rd GTEC Annual Summer School and Maiden Meritorious Awards 2026 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Director-General of GTEC, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, said only centres and campuses that satisfy minimum quality requirements will receive accreditation.
He explained that the temporary freeze will allow the Commission to review existing distance learning centres and ensure they continue to provide quality education amid increasing demand.
