Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ruled Iran with an iron fist for 37 years. As supreme leader, he expanded the country's military power and suppressed pro-democracy movements. He also repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel. He was killed in a US airstrike on Tehran at the end of February.
