KMA Mayor Explains Why Illegal Structures Were Demolished at Adum

Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi has reacted after angry residents occupying makeshift structures behind the COCOBOD building at Adum, near the Asafo Overpass in Kumasi, vandalised equipment and vehicles belonging to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) during a demolition exercise.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 8, when a KMA taskforce, supported by city guards, moved to demolish structures the Assembly says were illegally erected along waterways.
Residents resisted the exercise, claiming they were not given prior notice to vacate the area, resulting in a confrontation that left three KMA officers injured and damaged Assembly property.
Speaking to Citi News, the Kumasi Mayor explained that the demolition forms part of efforts to remove structures obstructing waterways and create access for the desilting of major drains ahead of the peak rainy season.
Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi stressed that the attack on Assembly personnel and property will not deter the KMA from implementing measures aimed at reducing flooding risks and protecting public safety.
