A search operation is underway for three people, including a baby, after a canoe carrying mourners capsized on the River Oti at Salnaayili in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region.
The seven occupants were returning from a funeral on Tuesday evening when the canoe overturned midstream. Reports indicate that the canoe was operating without life jackets at the time of the incident.
One woman survived after swimming to safety with her baby, while three bodies have since been recovered. Local fishermen and community members are continuing efforts to locate those still missing.
The former Assembly Member for the Salnaayili Electoral Area has been speaking to Channel One News on the tragedy and the ongoing rescue efforts.
