Trump, Zelenskyy outline Ukraine priorities ahead of bilateral talks at NATO summit

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke to the press ahead of their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, outlining their priorities for discussions on the war in Ukraine, air defence and future security guarantees. Trump announced that the US would grant Ukraine a licence to manufacture Patriot interceptor missiles, saying: "We're going to give you a licence to make Patriots... Make them yourself," describing the move as a defensive measure and expressing confidence that Ukraine could begin production quickly. Trump said he believes both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy want to end the war, calling Putin and Zelenskyy "difficult characters" but saying he believes a settlement is getting closer. Zelenskyy thanked the United States for its support, said air defence remains Ukraine's top priority, and highlighted progress on a potential US-Ukraine drone deal. He also said Ukraine's technological advances had helped shift momentum on the battlefield. Trump said the US would work on security guarantees for Ukraine and reiterated that rebuilding the country was more important than continuing the war, describing Ukraine as a nation with "tremendous potential". During the press conference, Trump also addressed Iran, saying US forces had carried out overnight strikes on Iranian targets and warning that further action was possible.
