MALLAM RAMSAR SITE: Authorities Discover Fresh Encroachment After June 29 Floods

A Ramsar site behind the Mallam Market in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality has been re-encroached despite a major demolition exercise carried out in April 2025 on the directive of the President.
During an assessment tour of flood-affected communities following the June 29 floods, members of the Council of State and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) uncovered fresh encroachment on the wetland as well as a major illegal dumping site in the area.
The discoveries have renewed concerns about the impact of wetland destruction, poor waste management, and unauthorised developments on flooding in Accra.
