Ghanaians Spend More as VAT Revenue Jumps 35.7%

Consumer spending in Ghana showed mixed trends in the first quarter of 2026, with domestic Value Added Tax (VAT) collections recording significant growth while retail sales slowed compared with the same period last year.

According to the Bank of Ghana's May 2026 Monetary Policy Report, domestic VAT collections increased by 35.7% year-on-year to GH¢2.06 billion in March 2026, up from GH¢1.52 billion recorded in March 2025.

The rise in VAT collections suggests stronger spending activity in parts of the economy, even as slower retail sales point to changing consumer behaviour and business conditions.

The data provides insight into Ghana's economic recovery, household spending patterns, and the broader outlook for businesses and consumers.
