A former Member of Parliament for Ayensuano, Samuel Ayeh-Paye, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), Dr. Frederick Appoh, have clashed over the suitability of locomotives procured for the Tema–Mpakadan railway line.
Ayeh-Paye questioned whether the refurbished locomotives can meet the long-term operational demands of the standard gauge railway system, arguing that Ghana should have invested in newer rolling stock.
He warned that the equipment may not provide value for money and could fail to serve beyond a few years.
However, Dr. Frederick Appoh rejected the concerns, describing them as technically inaccurate. He defended the locomotives, explaining that the Class 56 diesel units have undergone major upgrades, including improvements to the engine and traction systems, and are compatible with international railway standards.
