GUTA Rejects PURC Utility Tariff Hike | Clement Boateng Calls Out ECG & Ghana Water Losses

Speaking on Eyewitness News, GUTA representative Clement Boateng argues that the justifications for the tariff hike—including inflation, exchange rate movements, fuel costs, and generation mix—do not reflect current economic conditions. He points out that the cedi has remained relatively stable, inflation is comparatively low, and global oil prices have declined. He further criticizes inefficiencies within utility providers, highlighting major operational losses at Ghana Water (about 51–52%) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) (around 32%), which he attributes to theft, waste, and poor system management. According to him, these issues should be addressed internally instead of being transferred to consumers. Clement Boateng insists that under current conditions, tariff increases are not justified and calls for stronger accountability and revenue protection within the utility sector. He also confirms that GUTA has been invited to engage with PURC as part of stakeholder consultations before a final decision is made.
