Heatwaves, floods and wildfires hit US and Europe in extreme summer weather

Dangerous heat, flooding and wildfires are affecting communities across the United States and Europe simultaneously. In the eastern US, millions remain under heat alerts with temperatures reaching the high 30s Celsius, whilst severe thunderstorms are triggering flash flooding across the Midwest and Northeast. In Europe, red heat warnings are in place across southern, western and central Europe, with elevated wildfire risk around the Mediterranean. The converging hazards reflect a broader pattern of intensifying extreme weather driven by a warming atmosphere.
