‘Stuck in adolescence’: America can’t ‘grow up’ if we believe storybook version of ourselves

For many Americans, the nation's 250th birthday is marked by mixed emotions. Historian Eddie Glaude notes that every national milestone exposes the same fundamental struggle-- who belongs, and who gets to tell America's story. According to Glaude, Americans must look beyond the storybook version of our past. “The dramatic power of understanding the tragic nature of our past,” he urges, is like “opening a door to release us into being otherwise. It allows us to grow up.”
