The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) programme has identified encroachment on drainage buffer zones as a major contributor to perennial flooding in Accra.

Authorities say illegal developments along waterways and drainage paths are worsening flood risks, making it difficult for water to flow freely during heavy rains.

GARID has warned encroachers to desist from building on drainage reserves, stressing that such activities continue to undermine efforts to manage flooding in the capital.

The situation has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of planning regulations and long-term urban drainage solutions.
