Upper East Minister Speaks: Colonial History Still Affecting Northern Ghana’s Growth

The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has attributed the long-standing deprivation of Northern Ghana to colonial-era policies.

He explained that the northern sector was historically used as a labour reserve for cocoa farming and mining activities in the south, a system he says significantly slowed educational and economic development in the region.

According to him, these historical inequalities continue to have lasting effects and should be taken into account in modern national policy discussions aimed at addressing regional disparities.

The remarks have added to ongoing conversations about equitable development and resource distribution in Ghana.
