The desert 'power bank' that never sleeps
The vast Gobi deserts of northwest China are now emerging as new high grounds of the green energy revolution. This 100‑megawatt molten‑salt tower Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, employs over 12,000 heliostats to concentrate sunlight onto a 260‑metre tower. Equipped with thermal storage, it ensures consistent 24/7 power generation, producing 390 million kilowatt‑hours annually and reducing CO₂ emissions by 350,000 tonnes. As China's first 100‑megawatt‑class CSP demonstration project with full intellectual property rights, it offers a reliable, dispatchable clean energy source and establishes a benchmark for large‑scale CSP development aligned with the country's carbon‑peaking and carbon‑neutrality objectives.
