Security analyst Prof. Kwasi Anning delivered a detailed address at the 50th Anniversary Republic Day Lecture of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, focusing on the theme: “From the Sahel to the Gulf of Guinea: Addressing Violent Extremism and Maritime Insecurity in West Africa – Implications for Ghana and Regional Security.”
In his presentation, he examined the growing threat of violent extremism in the Sahel, highlighting developments in countries such as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, where terrorist groups have become increasingly sophisticated, coordinated, and audacious in their operations.
Prof. Anning warned that extremist groups are not only engaging in attacks but are also attempting to establish control over territories and provide services, posing a significant challenge to state authority across the region.
He further emphasized the implications of these developments for Ghana and the wider West African sub-region, calling for urgent and coordinated regional responses to emerging security threats.
