Former Chief Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Issah Yakubu (Rtd), delivered a powerful address at the 50th Anniversary Republic Day Lecture of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, focusing on the theme: “From the Sahel to the Gulf of Guinea: Addressing Violent Extremism and Maritime Insecurity in West Africa – Implications for Ghana and Regional Security.”
In his presentation, he emphasized that maritime security is central to national sovereignty, arguing that no coastal state can claim full sovereignty if it cannot secure its maritime domain.
He explained that oceans cover more than 70% of the earth's surface and that international law grants coastal states rights over vast maritime zones. However, illegal fishing, piracy, smuggling, and other transnational crimes continue to threaten these waters.
Vice Admiral Yakubu highlighted that sea power has historically been a foundation of national and regional influence, noting that Ghana and its West African partners learned critical lessons during ECOMOG naval operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
He further stressed that securing the sea is essential not only for national security but also for economic stability and regional influence in West Africa.
