The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, says the passage of the Maritime and Related Offences Bill, 2026, by Parliament will significantly strengthen Ghana's fight against sea robbery and piracy.

His comments follow a violent attack on Ghanaian fishermen by armed hijackers aboard a pirate vessel off the coast of Senya Breku in the Central Region, which left about 71 fishermen stranded at sea.

Speaking to journalists, the Minister explained that the proposed legislation, once assented to by the President, will provide stronger legal and operational tools to address emerging maritime security threats.

He emphasized that the bill forms part of broader efforts to improve safety on Ghana's waters and protect fishing communities that are increasingly vulnerable to criminal activity at sea.
